QUESTION: No I am not on a network
ANSWER: Hi Ann,
Everything I read says that you need to do a reinstall but why don't you try deleting the AIprefs file first?
1 - Quit Illustrator
2 - Locate and delete the file named AIprefs on your computer. It will be in the Illustrator Settings folder.
3 - Restart Ilustrator.
If this doesn't work, let me know.

QUESTION: Amy- I reinstalled and deleted the Alprefs file. No luck, all work is still saved in short cuts and is unable to be opened. I did notice if I did not add text that this problem did not happen. An other ideas?
Thanks,
Ann
AnswerHi again!
Thanks for the clue. That might be the key.
Quit AI and ALL other Adobe apps including Acrobat.
Locate and delete all files on your computer matching the pattern Adobefnt*.lst where * is a number and the extension is lst. There are a bunch of them. These are font cache files - Adobe programs use them to "quickly" load fonts when the programs start up. Once in awhile, they become corrupt.
Restart Illustrator. These files will be rebuilt as needed.
Test it again. If it doesn't work, you might have a corrupt font.
Let me know what happens!
