Adobe Illustrator/Outlining objects in Illustrator

Question

Hi Amy,

I need this answer ASAP (who doesn't, right?).

I want to outline an object in Illustrator CS on my Mac, but I don't
want the outline to go all the way around the object. I would like
one side to remain un-outlined.

Can you help me please? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Julia,

you can use the auto-trace tool to outline the entire object, then delete the segments of the path that you don't need (using the white arrow tool). You'll probably have to use the pencil and smoothing tools to make the auto-trace path nicer when you're done.

Or you can use the pencil tool to draw an outline around the half you want outlined... manually. You'll have more control that way.

Those are the only two ways I can think of.

Good luck!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
