Question
I'm bringing a pdf that contains architectural plans but when I try to apply color to it, all the lines seem to be grouped or linked in a weird way, is there a way to make the lines independent so I can apply some graphics to it?

Answer
Hi Israel,

I'm sure the objects are part of compound paths or clipping masks - they usually are in that type of file.

You could try working with the DIRECT SELECT tool (it's the white arrow). Use that tool to select a single object, then fill.  IF that doesn't work, you could try selecting everything and doing an Object > Clipping Mask > Release or Object > Compound Path > Release.

If those menu items are grayed out, then the objects are not part of compound paths or masks and we'll need to look at it more closely.

You can e-mail it to me at AmyLynPace@yahoo.com and I will take a look!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
