Question
Hello Amy,
I am working with CS2 and would like to insert a jpeg photo into a
circle I have on my page or create a new cirlce with the picture in it
or any other shape.

Answer
Hi Meg,

You're probably talking about creating a clipping mask.

Place your photo into your document.

Then create a circle using the circle tool. Move the circle over the portion of the photo you want to use.

Select both the photo and the circle and hit the Ctrl + 7 keys (this is the shortcut for Object > Clipping Mask > Make). To release it again, hit Ctrl + Alt + 7.

Note: In order for this to work, the circle must be on top of (in front of) the photo and neither the photo or the circle should be part of another group.

Good Luck!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
