Adobe Illustrator/Problems with spell check (and other plug ins)

Question
I saw your answers on locating the SpellCheckDictionary file.  Mine was in the right place, but only 96kb.  When I try to check spelling, it always says there are no errors.  (I wish). Also when I try to update the custom dictionary, it says it can not find the file.
Furthermore, a more fundamental problem may be when I try to do anything in the EDIT - Preferences area I get no response and my computer "Boings" when I enter any key except ESC.  ESC returns it to a working state, but no preferences.

Does this make any sense?

Answer
Hi Mark.

We never did solve that other person's dictionary issue.
Can you tell me what version of Illustrator... Mac or PC?
First thoughts...are you on a network? Is your settings folder write protected? If PC, are you signed in to your PC as admin?
I don't think I've ever heard of the boinging before. Weird. To me, that suggests a problem with permissions.

Have you tried deleting the AIprefs file?

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

Experience

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
