Adobe Illustrator/Quark - EPS - PDF - AI

Question
Hi,
I recieved a file created with Quark. This file was also sent as PDF and EPS.
I can view the artwork if I open it as a PDF but when I try to open it with Adobe Illustrator CS2 or 10, most of the artwork is not appearing. If I use the EPS file (photoshop) and then copy and paste it in AI, I can not modify the artwork either and the quality of the artwork is very low and can not be used.
I also tried to download a trial version of Quark but the file was not recognized by quarkXepress.
How can modify an artwork created as quark to use it in AI?
What can I do to be able to use the quark / EPS / PDF file and modify it in AI?

Thanks a lot,

Sarah

Answer
Hi Sarah,

That's about all you can do if you don't have Quark.

Can you open the EPS file in Illustrator? That's what I'd do first. I never have good luck trying to use PDFs from Quark. The text will most likely be chopped up into small segements but you can open the PDF in Acrobat and copy the text in large blocks and paste it into your AI file.

When you open the EPS file in PhotoShop, you need to specify the resolution as 300 dpi to get the high resolution of the tiff files. If the person did not generate the EPS or PDFs with full resolution tiffs, there's nothing you can do with those files - the artwork will still look lo-res even when you open it with 300 dpi specified.

Any way you choose to work on it, you will have to fix up the file somewhat, so I hope it isn't too complicated! Quark and AI just don't work together all that well, I'm afraid.

Wish I had a better answer for you,
Amy

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
