Adobe Illustrator/Radial Gradiant
Expert: Amy - 2/12/2004
QuestionAmy, I was wondering if you might explain how to change the direction of the light source when using the radial gradient palette. For instance, I have made a circle, and have used the gradient tool to make it appear 3 dimensional (like a sphere). However, the light appears to be coming from straight on (lightest in the middle, and darker to the edges)and I can't seem to get the light direction to move (so that it appears that the light is at an angle to the ball). I know there must be a simple way to move the light source around the sphere but can't seem to figure out how.
Thanks for your help!
Best regards,
Mark
AnswerHi Mark,
The easy way to move the center point of the gradient is to choose the gradient tool from the tool palette (G) and click on the point on the circle that you want the gradient to originate.
For example, create a circle and fill it with a gradient, maybe one from the gradient swatches or one you've created.
Now use the gradient tool to click on the circle somewhere other than the center and the center point should move.
Of course people who have Illustrator CS probably don't do it that way anymore, since there's now a filter. You said you had 10 so I don't know if the function used in this tuorial is available to you. But go to
http://www.thewebmachine.com/
then click on Illustrator, then Pool Balls (on the left).
It's pretty cool.
Good luck,
Amy
