Question
Using illustrator CS2, when I attempt to save a file in ai format containing a font I recieve error messages and it will not save. It is also the same if I try to save in PDF format.  However I don't seem to get any problems at all if I save in eps...could you please advise me.

Thanks Mike.

Answer
Hi Mike,

I wonder if this is the bug that people are talking about where there are no fonts in the Adobe Required Fonts folder.

Apparently, there's some installation bug that removes these fonts. Can't remember which versions it involves but it's worth a shot.

Check out that folder and see if it's got about 160 fonts in it or only 1 font. If it has only 1 font, the answer is to reinstall CS and move that folder to a safe location, install CS2 (which installs a "bad" Adobe Required Fonts folder), then move the folder you rescued back to its required location.

If this isn't the problem, it could be that the font you are attempting to embed is not "embeddable."  Some fonts aren't but can't communicate it to AI properly. Normally you would get a "can't embed font" message, right?

Anyway. If this is only happening with one particular font face, I'd also use a font util to check to see if the font is corrupt, although since you can save w/embed in EPS, I'm leaning toward the font folder bug.

I'd like to know which error you're receiving, too.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
