Hello Amy,
I should know this, but do not.
I have created a type logo in Illustrator CS, have created outline
of letters and saved it as a TIFF, JPEG and .ai file.
When I import any of these formats into an InDesign CS
document, it has a white background.
How do I make the background transparent in Illustrator CS?
Many thanks,
Kathleen.
Answer -
Hi Kathleen!

I think all you need to do is save it as an EPS document for the transparency to be recognized.

That is if you mean "no background" when you say "white background."

Let me know if that works for ya!

Hi Amy,

Sorry, it did not work. I got a white edge around each letter.
BTW, I work on a mac.
Any other ideas?  Should I send you an example of what I get?
For instance, if you just type in some letters in Illustrator CS, create outlines of letters, and then import into InDesign CS on a red background (in InDesign), how do you get a nice clean and sharp image with no white box or line around letterforms?

Thanks,
Kathleen

Answer
Hi Kathleen.

Did you try importing the graphic as a PDF file or a Native AI file?  According to the poster at the forum, those both work.  So maybe I should look at the Illustrator file you're generating.

Would you please send me the Illustrator file?
AmyLynPace@yahoo.com is my address.
I use Illustrator 9, so please "save down" for me! You can save it as a PDF.

Funny thing is - I can find a lot of complaints online about how InDesign interprets transparency but no simple answers.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
