Adobe Illustrator/compound paths not showing up to print.

Question
Hi.
I'm working with a document that has text set as compound paths and paths.  When I go to print it does not show up (not even in print preview).  For some reason when I create a "gradient mesh" the paths (text without holes in it) will show up in print preview but it's not allowing me to create that gradient mesh on the compound paths.  I realize maybe the gradient mesh thing isn't the proper way of doing it.  But how do I get all these paths to show up?
Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sarah.

What *I* would do... probably... is break down that group... ungroup, release those compound paths until everything is "single" again. Then grab each "letter with a hole" one at a time and create individual compound paths out of those. When you're done, you can group the text back together for easier layout modification. Then try the gradient mesh.

Yes, it shouldn't be that complicated, really, but you've probably seen the warning regarding complex compound paths that might not print?  I think you've discovered what they mean by that! =)

If this doesn't work for you, I'd be happy to look at the file. If it's a CS or CS2 file, I can look at it on Tuesday (holiday weekend). But I only have v9 available to me at home. If it's version 9, I can look at it immediately.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
