Adobe Illustrator/embossing

Question
Amy:
iMac 450, OS9.2.1, Illustrator 10, photoshop 7

Not sure if you got my question a couple of days ago but in case you didn't I was asking if you can emboss in Illustrator 10?  I was told that Illustrator can use almost all of the filters and layer effects of Photoshop but I don't know how that is done.  If I need embossing I export the file to photoshop and use the embossing feature but this is not what I want to do.  I would rather do everything in Illustrator.

Thanks
Ron

Answer
Hi Ron, yes, I did answer that question.

I'll see if I can resend my answer from allexperts somehow, but the basic message is that, no, you can't do embossing within Illustrator.  Not embossing that will separate properly.

Lots of the filters in Illustrator are PhotoShop filters that work on rasterized objects but Emboss is not one of them.

I think what your friend was trying to say was that you can somehow move the Emboss filter file from the PhotoShop folder into the Illustrator folder and that it will work as a filter/effect there.  But if I remember correctly, there isn't even an actual emboss filter file in the PhotoShop files.  I don't find one on my machine, do you???

If you do find an emboss.8bf file in your PhotoShop folder, move it to the PhotoShop filters section of your Illustrator folder and try it out!

Remember, though, that I only use 9.  They may have added it in 10, but I don't think so.

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

Experience

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
