Adobe Illustrator/Not enough memory to place an object

Question
Hi Amy,

I was running AI CS(11) on Windows XP Pro when my machine crashed due to software failure. i subsequently had the machine formatted and reinstalled with a slightly upgraded version of XP Pro.

Since this happend I have been getting a number of errors. One of which is: when opening a file contaning PSD images I get the error: "Not enough memory space to place the file"

My machine has plenty of memory and I have even tried to adjust the virtual memory but to no avail.

It looks like the deleting the AIpref files would be a good start but i cannot seem to locate them...

Any advice?

Thanks,
Matt

Answer
Yes Matt, deleting AIprefs is a good first step.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator x.x

Application Data folder is invisible (open the Documents and Settings folder and use Tools > Folder Options > Files and Folders > Hidden Files and Folders > Show Hidden Files and Folders to make it visible).

Then do a search for all files named Adobefnt*.list and delete them. Adobe builds and used font lists that can become corrupt.

If that doesn't work, you might want to do a clean install of the program. Detailed instructions for doing a clean re-install of AI can be found at Adobe.com.

Hope this helped!
Amy

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
