I've on occasion wanted this effect for vector graphics.

Here is what I've found:

Ensure your Document Raster Settings [under EFFECT] is set to 300 dpi for best results as we'll be going from vector to raster and back again.

Create some geometry, give it a gradient. Under EFFECT choose PIXELATE >CREATE COLOR HALF TONE. In this dialog window, select first your MAX. RADIUS in pixels, then for each of the four CHANNELS chose an angle, and use that exact value for the all channels. This will give you your monochrome half tone- rasterized.

Now let's re-vectorize it. Under OBJECT choose EXPAND APPEARANCE. You will be left with your halftone dots and a negative background. To delete the background and keep only the positive vector geometry, DIRECT SELECT one point in of the negative geometry, under SELECT choose SAME > FILL

I can answer Graphics questions related to Adobe Illustrator 9, 10, and CS. I also have Photoshop experience. Setting up files for printing is my main area of expertise. I am familiar with both PC and Mac platforms. No question is too silly. The only thing silly is a question not asked!
