Geometry can give an exact result for the circumference of an ellipse--but as one writer says, "there are simple formulas, but they are not exact, and there are exact formulas, but they are not simple." check at http://home.att.net/~numericana/answer/ellipse.htm#elliptic for the math, which is complicated.
