Adobe Illustrator/ill cs3 offset paths

Question
Is there a way to stop the offset paths tool from selecting the same size object along with the offset path.  i used this option to offset shapes in CS2 to build traps and knockouts. In CS3 I have to go back and deselect my original shape.  This is not a huge problem except it does becomes aggrivating when dealing with outlined text.

Answer
Hi Julie.

Well, there's no way to create them and have them be separate shapes or separate groups, you're right - (great thing to request for next version because it bugs me, too).

But there's something that may work for you if your NEW offset path is a spread. That is, larger than/outside of the original path. You can use pathfinder to absorb that original path.
1) Select everything involved.
2) Use the little flyout menu on the upper right corner of the Pathfinder Window to "Make compound Shape" then hit the EXPAND button on the Pathfinder window.

I can't think of a way to do it if the offset path is negative/smaller than/inside/a choke of the original path but there's got to be a way to do this. If you figure it out, let me know.

In most cases, it really shouldn't matter in the end; no matter how many paths are there, as long as they are all the same color, the plates will sep correctly. I'm sure there are situations where you really can't allow those old paths to be there.

Another thought. Like you, I've been using Illustrator for a long time and haven't really explored the TRAP function built into Pathfinder... pretty much because I'm used to doing it manually, like you. But I recommend you look at it. It works!

If I figure out a way to choke and get rid of the old path, I will let you know!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
