Question
Hi Amy,
I am trying to use the clipping mask tool. in the following way. I have a small logo I am trying to put on a silhoutte of a sock.( all drawn in illustrator) I placed the sock on top of the logo- where I want the logo to wrap around. I then group the objects. and use the clipping mask. It all turns clear- and I can't change the color I desire on the sock or the logo. what I am I doing wrong? can you give me a run down on the directions of using clipping mask properly?

Thanks for you help.

Best,
Angela

Answer
Hi Angela,

I think it's the grouping that's the problem.

Group the logo, that's fine. But don't include the sock silhouette in that group.

Put the sock outline IN FRONT OF the logo.

COPY the sock outline. We need to paste it in front after the next step... because it disappears when you use it to make a clipping mask.

Select both the logo and the sock outline and hit Ctrl + 7

Now PASTE IN FRONT (Ctrl + F) to put the sock outline back in front. This copy of the outline should have no fill and whatever stroke color/width you need for your design.

I hope this helps you!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
