Question i am trying to install the free trial for illustrator cs2, and towards the beginning, it asks for a serial number. i cannot find any serial number.

you may be double clicking the wrong file.
When you double-click the exe file you downloaded, it will begin its extract process.
The files will be extracted to a folder. You then need to run Setup.exe from that new folder. You should not be prompted for a serial number.
