Question
i did this a few months ago and forgot how i did it >> i placed what i believe is a mesh over some text and then distorted the image of the text by repositioning the mesh-like grid points. i have not been able to reproduce what i had done > was it the mesh tool? then how did i transform the text to an object OR can this be done by creating a 'text object' in photoshop and then opening it in illustrator. can't reporduce what i had done >> help!

Answer
Hi Jeff.

It wasn't gradient mesh, that's for applying multiple gradients to an object.

I think you applied a distort filter.  I don't have version 10, only 9, so I don't know for certain that there isn't some new tool in 10.

Anyway, to recreate it:

Select your text with the BLACK ARROW selection tool so that the text you want is underlined and choose Type > Create Outlines or hit SHIFT + CTRL + O.

The individual letters will be grouped.

Select the new outlined text and choose Filters > Distort> Free Distort from the menu.

Play with it in Preview and select OKAY.

You can distort the letters individually by UNGROUPING them and selecting them individually and applying the filter to one letter at a time.

Have fun with it
Amy
