Adobe Illustrator/joining outline text to an object

Question
PC, AI 10. I need to create outline text at 30% transparency and join it to the top of a rectangle, also at 30% transparency, so it is one unit and no 'overlap" of the transparency

Answer
Hi There,

Create your text and select "Create Outlines" from the Type menu.

Create your rectangle. Doesn't matter what you fill the shapes with right now.

Position the two elements as you want them. From your description, I get the impression you want the text sitting on top of the rectangle, like a sign atop a tall apartment building???? Zoom in and make sure they are touching or the next step won't work.

Select both objects. Hold down the ALT key and click the Add to shape button in the pathfinder palette.

You should now get a compound shape that you can color (F6) and/or adjust transparency (Shift+F10).

Please note that there are other combinations of pathfinder palette buttons that will accomplish the same end result so don't be surprised if you find more answers out there!
