Adobe Illustrator/Can I open Illustrator 8 eps in cs2

Question
Hi Amy,
I'm about to buy a new G5 and install Illustrator cs2 and i was wondering if i'll be able to open all of my old Illustrator 8 eps files on the new program.
Was going to target disc mode my old g4 os9 to the new G5 os tiger and drag all of my illustrator files over. I mostly save them as illustrator 8 .eps and hope I don't have a problem opening them up. If there is a problem with opening the illustrator 8.eps's what should I do. Resave them as .pdf's or .ai's? I hope i don't have to do that cause there are a lot of files.
thx, chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

Lucky.

You'll be able to open them all right but I guess there is an issue involving a bug that makes it *look* like you can't save your old files as anything but PDF. You will be able to open them but some folks claim that Illustrator opens them as PDF and then won't let you save them as Illustrator anymore. But I guess it's actually a DISPLAY bug and that it really *is* saving as AI...  it's a convoluted and strange topic...

If you would like to read up on this topic yourself, please log in to the adobe forums, go the Illustrator Macintosh forum and search for this thread:
****Can't save in Illustrator Format (CS, Tiger)****

Don't let it stop you from upgrading. I think there's something in that forum discussion thread about how you can install CS2 and avoid the problem ever happening in the first place.

Hope this helps a little.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
