Question
Hi Amy,

Any help regarding this? Am i able to outline the text without gaining any weight?

Answer
Hi Alvin,

If you are experiencing a significant amount of weight gain on press from outlined text, you can run an offset path command on the text you converted using a small negative number (exactly how small depends on the size of the text of course) to compensate for the gain.

Outline the text (use 24pt text as an example).
Select the text. Choose Object > Path > Offset Path > -.5pt.

A smaller version of the text will appear inside of the text. You now have to clean up the larger text behind (no simple way to do that).

Another way to make text appear smaller is to assign it a small white stroke (or whatever solid color it sits on). Of course, this will only work for text on solid colors.

I'm sure there are other methods to do this. I can't think of any right now. If I do, I will get back to you!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
