Adobe Illustrator/outlines inside an object

Question
Hi i'm using illustrator 9 for pc. Here is my problem, about a week or so ago i was playing around with a design i had created in illustrator, and i double clicked on something somehwere and a pop up menu came up with a lot of options like, outlines, embossing etc. My question is what do i need to get this menu back up so i can get an outline inside of my design. Hi Tyler,

You must have been looking at the Filters or the Effects (see Filter/Effects menus).  Most only work in RGB color mode and on imported images.

Outlines could have been Ink Outlines under Artistic>Brush Strokes. These effects really don't do much to vector objects - they are mainly for use on imported images.
