Expert: Amy - 5/8/2007
QuestionQUESTION: i needed to free up some space on my c drive so i de-installed illustrator 10 then re-installed it onto my d drive. the programm works but i have no filter effects (Drop shadow etc)and half of the tools are missing(square, circle, rounded square etc) and it acts differently. when it was on c it was 125mb now it is 113mb. i tried doing a repair on it but it still has the same problems, now the size is 175mb.
help! what is the problem, i work almost everyday with this program. im stuck without it
ANSWER: Hi Pilli,
Go into Preferences, Plug-Ins and Scratch Disks and "re-target" the proper Plug-Ins folder by clicking "Choose" and locating it on your machine.
You may have to restart Illustrator for those changes to take effect.
If that doesn't help, Quit AI, locate the AIprefs file, delete it, and restart Illustrator.
If *that* doesn't work, either, write me back and we'll take it from there.

QUESTION: hi amy,
i have retargeted the plug ins folder but it still is no different.
what are Aiprefs and where do i find them?
AnswerHi.
The AIprefs file is a file on your machine. With your setup, I don't know what the path would be, so you'll have to do a search for it. Do it with the program NOT running. It's usually in a path that contains a hidden folder, soo, so searching is the best way to get it.You should also do a search for all files named adobefnt*.lst and delete all you find.
Did you properly uninstall from C before installing on D?
Since I have never run Illustrator on the non-boot drive, I can't recommend doing that. Could you perhaps move some data files instead of an application?
I did a few searches on Adobe.com and couldn't find any tips for installing on a non-boot drive for Windows. I'll look around elsewhere later today.
