Question
dear amy,
i have an ai file in cs2. i would like to save it as eps. some bits stick outside the document area and i do not want these bits in my eps file, i just want the bits within the rectangle artboard thing. in the original ai file i dont want to delete these bits. whatever i do i cant seem to get an eps file which limits its size to the artboard rectangle.
thanks
mikhail

Answer
Hi Mikhail,

Try this.

Make sure you are working on your topmost layer if you work with layers.

Use the rectangle to draw a box the same size as your artboard with no fill and no stroke color.

Now Select All (Ctrl+A) and Hit Ctrl+7 (Create Mask).

Now you can save as EPS and the mask shape will block out everything outside the box.

To reverse the mask, simply select All and hit Ctrl+Alt+7.

I hope this helped! There may be other ways to do this using Layers but this is the fastest way I could think of!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
