Question
Have you had any problems with stroke widths changing when
you open a pdf file in illustrator. The pdf file was supplied to me
so I do not know what software was used to produce it. Is there
something I am missing when opening the pdf that would
resolve the problem?

Hi Tanya.

I have not experienced that, no....

Since stroke is defined by a numerical value (in most apps), it would be most unlikely that the actual value is changing.  Could it be a smoothing artifact?  When you zoom in close is it still visibly different? If it looks fine when you've zoomed in, check your Acrobat prefs and play with the display/smoothing options.

If possible, I'd like to see this PDF file. Could you mail it to me at AmyLynPace @ yahoo.com (remove the spaces) and I'll see what I can see. I can probably tell you what app created it, too.
