Adobe Illustrator/Can't Open Illustration File

Question
I am using Adobe Illustrator 10. My problem is, when I try to open a file that I created and saved, I get an error message that says: "Can't open the illustration. The illustration exceeds an implementation limit."
I can open it if I use "File" "place" option, but I need to modify the image. How can I do this in Illustrator and also open file? I can't afford to lose this one. HELP!
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sarah,

This situation - a corrupt file - can be tricky. Are you on a PC? Try changing the file suffix to PDF and opening it with Illustrator... that SOMETIMES works.

Otherwise, you can try sending it to me (AmyLynPace@yahoo.com) and I'll play around with it.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
