Answer
Hi Ryan,

Well, usually resetting the preferences fixes many problems, so let's make sure you did that correctly
1 - QUIT Illustrator
2 - Locate and DELETE AIPrefs file
3 - RESTART Illustrator

But it seems that it could be a corrupt Workspace? Delete the AIWSPrefs file (in the Settings folder), too.

There seems to be a bug in CS2 that causes random window vanishings...  people running CADtools report this problem more often. To work around it, you could set up and save a workspace with the palette arrangement you like and then the next time your tools disappear, load the saved workspace.

Just to cover all bases, there's Window > Show/Hide Tools.  I'm sure you've toggled that.

Then there's the possibility that it's behind something else, so hit Shift+Tab and all the windows except the tool box should go away.

Let me know if anything helped, and we'll go from there.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
