Adobe InDesign/graphic design career

Question
Dear Mr. Black,

I'd like to professionally engage in both - children's illustration as well as graphic design, and I would like to ask you which software would you recommend I buy? Except for creating original material and mastering the software what else do I need to learn? Is there a book on the basics of graphic design that you particularly like and might suggest I look for.

Thanx so much.

Sincerely,

Ana

Answer
Hi Ana,

If you have not already been utilizing any software up to this point, I recommend that you take a course that specializes in teaching Adobe Illustrator or other illustration software. This should get you familiar with the program and allow you to decide if that is the correct route for you personally. It will also keep you from spending a large amount of money.

Unfortunately, I cannot think of any particular books dealing with the basics of graphic design that I personally can recommend. Though, I can say that for the most part the any of the books on the store shelf in this subject should give a decent overview.

Again, I suggest a course in design. Most schools (community and university) offer beginning design classes without prerequisite. Typically the text (if any) required by such a course will cover the basic mechanics and should present ideas from more than one perspective.

Hands on interaction with your peers, instructors and mentors will give you the best training, in my opinion.

Thanks,

Ken Black
