About Sharon MacGregor
Expertise I use Indesign on a daily basis for work, and at home in my more creative ventures. I can answer pretty much any type of question relating to production, design, page layout, and new features of CS3. I work on a PC (yes I know that is rare), so I am more familiar with the PC commands than mac, but I know that more often than not, the Ctril button on the PC is the same as the command button on the Mac, so they are the same!
Experience I've been working in this field since 1988. Started out when they were still doing pasteup and using a wax machine :) Have worked on both Mac and PC on several programs, but my present employer uses PCs and I bought a PC for home so I could work at home. Right now, I work on educational/technical textbooks. I have experience with magazines, newspapers, corporate identity, page layout, and general design.
Education/Credentials I have a BA in psychology with a minor in art, and am working towards an MA in Learning and technology integration (using computers to teach).

Subject: Bleed Help for Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, PDF
Question I'm using Adobe InDesign to lay out a magazine that is 8.5" x 11". I'm using Adobe Illustrator to illustrate, and then I'm transferring the pages over to Adobe InDesign for layout.
I understand that I have to make my pages larger in Illustrator to have the bleeds in InDesign(in my case -- 1/4" inches all around). I've made my cover 9" x 11 1/2", which looks OK in InDesign. However, for the left and right page panels I'm not sure if I change them to 8 3/4" x 11 1/2" in Illustrator or if I leave them as 9" x 11 1/2". What do I do?
In addition, when I take the magazine to the printers, I will need to convert the InDesign layout to PDF. I saved it as a PDF just to get a preview of the left and right panels that I made 8 3/4" x 11 1/2". The left panel is cut short on the right, while the right panel shows a bit of the left panel. What am I doing wrong?
If you can get back to me as soon as possible (taking the magazine to print on 03/24/08), that'd be great.
Thank you for your time.
Answer You would leave your page sizes at 8 1/2 x 11, then place your illustrator file on those pags, allowing at least 1/8" bleed on each side of your page (but it's probably wise to allow 1/4" as all printers have different specs. When you get ready to make your PDF, in the print menu, under "Marks and Bleed," deselect "document bleed settings, and enter .25" (1/4") in the boxes marked top bottom left and right. Under marks, choose "all printers marks."
Then under setup, change your page size to "tabloid", and the page position to centered.
The printers marks will tell the printer where the edge of your pages are.
I would contact your printer and see if they have a specific format in which they like to recieve books. Sometimes if the printer likes PDFs, they have a specific way that they like them, and somtimes they will send you "job options" that you can load into Indesign that will help you make the PDFs the way they like them.
