Adobe InDesign/CS4 return key problem

Question
I just re-installed CS4 onto my new laptop and for some reason when I am in a text box typing and I hit a hard return (key above the shift key) all the text below the return disappears. I have tried several things and even talked to Adobe and they cannot help me with it. The program still works fine on my OLD laptop and worked fine at the first on my new one, but then just suddenly stopped working. Any ideas? I saw that Expert James had tried to help with someone with this problem earlier, but never did see if the problem got resolved.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Rita,

Once the text disappears, I would open Story Editor and make a selection that includes your return and some overset characters. Check in the Character and Paragraph palettes to make sure there are normal values in all the spaces, if a spot is blank - insert a value, for example, if the leading box is empty insert a number equal to your character size, Check the space before and space after boxes.

You can also try selecting all the text and make sure the type is black and change it to a known Paragraph and Character styles, just in case you imported something weird. If there is some blank graphic this should show up in the Story Editor as an anchor type of icon where it can be deleted. Also, under the type menu Show Hidden Characters to see if anything unusual pops up.

Hope this helps,

Happy Holidays,
