Question
After setting up auto page numbering, everything works fine except page numbers on pages with full bleed images will not show up. When you move the image, the numbers are there behind the image. In master pages, I try to arrange the page number to send to front, and also on the page did arrange, move to back for the image. Nothing is working. I would appreciate any advice. thank you, Mary-Ann

Answer

Adobe InDesign Layers
Hi Mary Ann, thanks for the question.

I get this a lot--and there's an easy fix. Many people don't use Layers effectively in InDesign and here is where they really come in handy.

Select your Master Page in the Pages panel and then open the Layers panel. Make a new Layer on top of the layer (or layers) that everything else is on. Rename the layer "Master Page Items." Move the page number text boxes to this new, top layer. Now, before you do any more design on the inside pages, you should make sure your original layer is selected and you might even lock the new Master Page Items layer. Now choose one of your inside pages from your Pages panel. From now on your page numbers will be on top of everything else on the inside spreads as long as you design on the layers below.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
