Question
I am new to InDesign, I am formatting a 100 page book in Microsoft Publisher and am having a difficult time with formatting taking on all pages.  It was suggested that i try InDesign.  I want to know how to import my work as well as do some basic formatting. Paragraphs, first and second line indention and how to get it on two pages in book format.  Please Help!

Answer
Hi, Beverly––thanks for the questions.

Well, you've asked a mouthful. If you're asking about importing your Publisher files into InDesign as editable information, I'm afraid you can't. However, there is a plug-in you can buy (or try) from Markzware at http://www.markzware.com/pub2id/ I haven't tried this plug-in personally, but I'm quite happy with Markzware's Quark-to-InDesign plug-in.

A lot of what you will find in formatting paragraphs is in the Paragraph Panel (Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph). Experiment with the options while your cursor is in a paragraph and you'll quickly get to know what they do.

For a book format, I think you mean Facing Pages. When starting a new document where you'd like to have spreads that open together, make sure to select the Facing Pages checkbox in the New Document dialog box.

Hope this helps, let me know if you get stuck along the way.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
