Adobe InDesign/Text boxes

Question

I've attached an image where you'll notice...the headline and text, which were
place on top of a brown box [in InDesign CS3], came out with a white box
behind the text. That wasn't there on the pdf I created, yet it printed like this.
Wonder what caused this issue? Many thanks, in advance, for your sage wisdom!

Answer

InDesign's PDF Export
Ah ha, white box syndrome. Thanks for the question, Todd.

This is your printer's RIP not handling the flattening of your transparency properly. In the world of print we use a language called PostScript developed by Adobe. In PostScript you can't actually print transparency so it gets flattened somewhere along the workflow. In this case, you exported your PDF with "live" transparency and they attempted to flatten it just before printing.

Now a days, the more technical printers are well-versed in printing the new generation of live transparency. If you're not sure where your printer stands (as in this case), I suggest you flatten the PDF on your end, and check for white boxes before sending the PDF.

To do this, export your PDF as a PDF/X-1a:2001 using the preset under the export menu. Once you export the PDF this way, any problems will show up *before* you send them to the printer.

Hope this helps, any other questions, let me know. Thanks.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
