Adobe InDesign/Setting the Offset for a PDF

Question
Hi! I am converting my InDesign Documents into PDFs before I send them to the printer, and I have turned on the crop and bleed marks. I have a 1/4 inch bleed on one document, and a 3 millimeter bleed on another document. Could you please help me know what I am supposed to set the Offset to??? I am not even sure what the Offset does!!! If you could let me know, I would be much appreciative! Thanks!

Answer
Hi Amie,

Offset refers to the distance the crop marks starting point is from the trim edge of the document.

I recommend checking with your printer as to what amount of offset and bleed they require. While there is sort of an unspoken standard, printer's can have different set-up requirements for various reasons.

Standard settings usually follow this -

1/8 (.125) inch (3.175 millimeter or 9 points) for both bleed and offset.

Visit our website for a step-by-step example at:

This allows the crop marks to be far enough away from the trim edge so that should a variation in trimming occur, they will not show in the finished product.
