Question
my document is the standard 8.5x11- so far 120pgs of photographs. i kept the photo within the blue line but don't care for the white background of the document. is there any way to change the background to black? thanks

Answer

InDesign's Master Page
Hi Danny, thanks for the question.

There are a couple ways you could do this--depending if you want it to print or not.

If you do want it to print (or appear in a PDF), I suggest you go to your master page in your Pages Panel and draw a black box the size of the page. Anything you put on a master page will appear on every inside page that has that master page applied to it. If you're producing a document for on-screen viewing, I suggest a rich black of C35 M35 Y35 K100; if you're producing a document for professional printing, I suggest a rich black of C15 M15 Y15 K100.

If you have any questions on how to create and apply master pages, let me know.

There is another easy way to achieve a working preview of a black background without having it print. Double-click on the Paper swatch in the Swatches Panel and change the C0 M0 Y0 K0 colour to C0 M0 Y0 K100. This will show you a preview of what your photos would look like on black *paper*.

Anything else, let me know. Thanks.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
