Adobe InDesign/Linking to HiRes images in InD

Question
Hi -

Is it possible to direct InD (CS3 or CS4) to swap out a group of LoRes images for the HiRes images if they HR images all reside in the same folder. The extension of the LR image is different than the HR image. The only way I seem to be able to do it is via the links palette but only one at a time, and it is extremely time consuming and prone to errors.

Thanks for your help!

Cathy

Answer
Hey Cathy, thanks for the question.

I don't tend to use low-res images in my work since InDesign performs well when using high-res images... especially when using a low-res preview if I have an image-heavy project.

However, if I were to do this, I would probably have a folder called Images and then another called High-Res Images. I would keep the names of the images themselves the same, and then when I wanted to swap out the low for high I would rename the folder with the low-res images to Low-Res Images and rename the high-res image folder to simply Images. InDesign would then link to the high-res images.

If you'd like to look at some third-party plugins, I would suggest checking out Zevix's Link Optimizer (http://zevrix.com/linkoptimizer.php) or Teacup's Image Swapper (http://www.teacupsoftware.com/products/ImageSwapper.html). I think Teacup has a trial version you can download for free.

Hope this helps!

Scott

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
