Many thanks

Emma

Answer
Hi Emma,

While there maybe plug-ins or scripts to do this in earlier versions of Indesign, only Indesign CS3 or CS4 have the ability to add Text Variables that can do exactly what you are looking for.

If you are using Indesign CS3 or CS4, go to your Master Pages and create a text box for you page numbering.

Keep the box selected with the type cursor active inside and choose:

Type -> Insert Special Characters -> Markers -> Current Page Number

You should see a letter A appear. After the letter A add your / or  other separator text.

You will now have something such as this:  A/

After you have added the separator, keep the cursor in the box and choose:

Type -> Text Variables -> Insert Variable -> Last Page Number

You now should have a line of text that looks like this:  A/1

Now any pages that have this Master applied will include your page numbering.

Thanks,
