Adobe InDesign/Moving an object and frame

Question
QUESTION: I "placed" a jpg and have tried using Adobe Help with no luck...I'm trying to move the jpg and it keeps moving the frame and not it's content.  I've tried using the "white" arrow...what I am doing incorrectly?  Thanks in advance!

ANSWER: Hi JoAnn,

I must admit I am a little stumped. Are you trying to move the jpeg inside the frame or are you trying to move both the frame and the image at the same time?

The "direct selection tool" (white arrow) should move the jpeg inside the frame but keep the frame in place. You have to make sure nothing is selected, then click to select the jpeg and click+hold to move the jpeg.

I'm sorry if this doesn't help. Without seeing the behavior first-hand, it's difficult to diagnose.

Best of luck,

Roy

QUESTION: Roy,

I know I didn't ask the question in the best way - my bad.  I am trying to move the frame and the object.  I can get the frame to move - then or course there is nothing in it.  I can also get the frame AND object to move but only slightly up and down.  I need to move "everything" to a different spot.  I'm used to Corel where you simply select and drag.

Thanks for your patience!

Answer
JoAnn,

No worries. It's not easy to explain in text, is it?

I should point out that if you're using CS5, there's a new feature when working with frames and images with the selection tool (black arrow) that you should to be aware of.

So there are two selection tools:
1. Selection Tool (black arrow). Used to select frames and objects.
2. Direct Selection Tool (white arrow). Used to select graphics and images inside frames; as well as paths and points.

Prior to CS5, when you wanted to select an image within a frame, you had to move the mouse over to the toolbar and click the white arrow icon, then move the mouse back over to the frame and select the image. (Or you could just press the 'A' key to select the white arrow tool, but I digress). Now, with CS5, even if you have the black arrow selected, you can quickly and easily select the image in the frame without first switching to the white arrow tool. As you hover the selection tool close to the center region of the frame, it will switch to the direct selection tool for you so you can select and move the image. (I hope that all makes sense). Is it possible that this is what was happening to you?

I guess it's also possible that the frame or the file somehow became corrupt.

Try this if the above explanation didn't help:
Reimport the jpeg:
• Use the frame tool to draw a frame on the page.
• With the frame selected, go to File > Place and place the jpeg into the frame.
• Using the selection tool (black arrow), click on the frame and move the frame and image.

Best of luck!

Roy
