Adobe InDesign/Book Spine

Question
Hi Scott. I'm currently writing a book and have decided to use InDesign CS3 - in
both the former and latter I am a complete novice. I plan on having my A4 book
perfect bound with book title etc. on the spine. How do I create a spine in
InDesign? Regards, Paul.

Answer
Hi Paul, thanks for the question.

First of all, good luck with your book. As for the design, I would say that your cover should be a separate InDesign document from the rest of your book. If your pages are A4, do the inside of the book in one document and set up the cover of your book as one page... front cover, back cover and spine all in one.

So if your pages are 21 x 29.7cm (sorry, I'm used to dealing with inches), I would make the cover 29.7cm high, and 21+21+the width of the spine wide. Of course, at this stage, we don't know how thick your book is going to be but you could guess. Say, 21+21+2cm=44cm and then readjust just before you go to print. Set some guides to show the folds at 21cm and 23cm and design from there.

I hope this gets you started Paul. Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
