Question
Hello,
I am working on a multi page booklet for work and I was wondering if you think I should purchase Adobe INdesign or Adobe Illustrator. Also, what are the pros and cons of each? The printer I am working with right now is called Ricoh SP C811DN which i heard might cause problems with the INdesign software. Please help!
thanks
Jackie

Answer
Hi Jackie, thanks for the question.

I think the only reason someone might have told you that InDesign won't work with your printer is because it's not PostScript language printer. I don't think you'll have any problems with it, but even if you did, you can always export to PDF and print from Acrobat.

One of the first pros of InDesign over Illustrator for your project is multi-pages. Illustrator and InDesign are really made for two separate purposes; InDesign is page layout program and Illustrator is made for, well, illustrations such as logos, graphs or charts. It's not to say you can't do a bit of both in each program, just that one is has more powerful features for certain designs.

InDesign has other page-layout features that Illustrator lacks too; master pages, better type control, dynamic table-of-contents generator, object styles and a whole lot more. For further information on these features you can check out http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/ and see what else InDesign has to offer for what you'll be working on. Enjoy and good luck!

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
