Adobe InDesign/Illustrator vs InDesign

Question
Hi Scott,

I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. I will have to create a mini magazine for the company I work for..probably sized around 4 x 4.

I own Illustrator CS2 and I am just wondering if it is fine if I create it in Illustrator. Is using InDesign for that type of project better? I could download the trial....I just don't want to do it if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help you can give me!!

Allie

Answer
Hey Allie, thanks for the submission.

That's a great question. And, for the record, I love Illustrator as well. But one of the biggest benefits of InDesign for a project like this is the multiple pages or spreads you can set up. I imagine you can set up your pages as separate documents and merge them into a final PDF for output, or even set up your docs at 8 x 4 spreads to get two pages out of them... but it's a little more work.

So, to answer your question, I would use InDesign for any multi-page documents, but it's really a personal preference. If you do end up trying InDesign and have any other questions, I would be happy to help you along the way. Good luck Allie.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
