my easy answer is to just start playing with Indesign. You're making the cover like you would any other document.

QUESTION: The book cover is 14 x 8.5" with flaps.  I don't know how to create the flaps

set up your paper like normal

then pull the margin lines out from the rulers on the left and right. These margins will indicate, for yourself, where you want to have your flaps. So, If you want a 4 inch flap on each side, then you will need to put a margin at 4 inches and at 10 inches.

the best way to start is to make up a mock with some spare paper. That way, you can see what your doing.
