Adobe InDesign/Indesign image placement

Question
Why do I get a gray box when I place/import an image into a file?

Answer
because you are in the lowest mode of viewing.
right click (or ctrl click) - set your mode to regular or high

regular will give you a pixelated image (it's not pixelated, just makes the computer fun faster ;))

High gives you what it really looks like

There are a few other reasons, like a file corruption, but I'm sure that's not it. let me know if you need anymore help.
