Question
after setting up pagination with auto page numbers in my master pages, how
do i select the text box on an individual page within the document? those text
boxes seem to be locked. for example, if i want to bring a page number to
the front of a color field, i find that if i click on the text box about 50 times, it
eventually recognizes it and allows me to select it, but this is not a good
solution when working with 100 page documents. is there a preference that
will allow me to unlock these text boxes?

Answer
Hi Keeli, thanks for your question.

There are a few ways to do this; I think you'll find InDesign is very versatile when using Master Page objects.

If you want to "unlock" individual Master Page items while on your document pages, hold down Cmd-Shift (Mac) and click over the item and it will copy the object from the master page and put it on the page you're working on. If you'd like to unlock all the Master Page items on a page (or spread) at once, click on the fly-out menu (the tiny circle with the triangle in it at the top of the palette) in the Pages palette and select Override All Master Page Items while in your document.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Experience

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye. Being one of the reasons for Adobe buying Aldus, I knew this would change the publishing world very quickly. I started using InDesign's first release and haven't looked back. I have dedicated my work and much of my spare time using InDesign to its fullest—and it's paid off. My workflow is quicker, my computer runs smoother, and my files print cleaner and without problem.
