Adobe InDesign/packaging for handoff

Question
QUESTION: I am down to the last step in creating my book.  I have selected package and after all the links are in, it would ask which program to open the file and I selected notepad and it gave me the report.  Now something has changed.  When I select package, it packages everything, the files, the fonts, the links but at the end it says, this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create and association in the folder options control panel.  It doesnt say which file format to associate? I have tried the normal ones for txt files and it is still doing this.  The only thing I have changed has not to do with that I have assigned a different profile.  Not sure that has anything to do with it.

ANSWER: Hi Mary,

I'm not sure what could be causing your problem. Especially if it was working okay to begin with. But this might help you get through the packaging process without getting the error. After you select the Package option and choose Continue in the Printing Instructions dialog, turn off the View Report option in the Packaging dialog by un-checking it. This way it will still create the report, but it won't try to open it automatically after packaging. Then you can choose which application to open it with, or not worry about opening it at all. And after it's packaged, I'd just verify that everything has been packaged properly before shipping it off for production.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your submission.

QUESTION: I tried that and it works only there is no report at all.
I guess the workaround would be to get a report from preflight...?

Answer
Oh, great!

Well, if getting a report from Preflight works without that problem, then yes, try that. But honestly, I delete the report before sending the files on to my service provider. I have a text file I've created with my detailed contact information in it that I include instead and always have accurate instructions in the accompanying email and over the phone. I wouldn't leave it up to just the instructions.

Glad it worked, good luck with your book, Mary.

After starting my design career using QuarkXPress and PageMaker for many years, the release of InDesign instantly caught my eye.
