Subject: web page building
Question I am an artist but totally green with computers. This is what I want to do. I would like to start building my own web pages with the final goal of starting an e-card web site. It will take some time I know before I can get it all put together. I'm not ready to pay for a site or open a site, I just want to start building on each page. I am saving my designs & poems on floppy disk that I make on my computer PhotoImpression program. I will need to transfer this artwork onto the pages I build on.
Where can you send me to start doing this for free? I will defintely need something easy to understand, maybe something for beginners. I'm not familiar with computer talk. But keep in mind that eventually this must all transfer over to an ecard site with music, flash, java & notification features. The Adobe programs look good to eventually use, but I'm just not ready yet to pay for a program.(I'm doing this on my time off from work and it's taking a long time)Thanks, I hope you got all that
Answer First off, if you don't have one, invest in a CD burner or a zip drive. You can get more on them than any floppy disk.
As for freebies, you might want to start with a free server like GeoCities or Tripod since they have a page builder that comes with their accounts. For the e-card thing, you can always try free site add-on services like Bravenet (bravenet.com) which have add ons ranging from guest books to hit counters to yes, e-cards.
You might also look at getting some books on the topic like "Building a Website For Dummies." It'll tell you all about how to create your first site and in simple lanuage. It also comes with a CD that inculdes some trial versions of different programs and other tools that you might find useful.
And as for your thoughts on programs, I can already tell you that Adobe Photoshop & AfterEffects (the latter can be used for graphic animation). As for creating the webpages themselves, I personally like Macromedia's Dreamweaver but you might find the trials on the CD inculded in the book I suggested to be so good that you might want to buy them.
PS. Creating a website from the ground up takes a long time so pace yourself.
