Adobe Photoshop/creating a free floating image

Question
I have photoshop 7.0. I have been trying EVERY suggestion as to how to remove the background completely from an image, but without any luck. I can remove the background I began with, Showing the checkered background in Microsoft viewer after saving it as a png and also when saving it as a gif, but when I copy and insert the image I've saved I stiill can see a white background. It also has a black borderline around it to make it even more agravating. Does the original image I am bringing into photoshop have to be a certain file type or what?! Please, if you can, help me with this. I have several pictures of kitties that I want to place side by side without any background or white box around them. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kaelin,

The only way to do this is to create a clipping path. You do this by drawing an outline around the kitty with the pen tool or by selecting just the kitty with selection tools and making a working path. In the path palette got to the fly out menu by clicking the small triangle in the upper right corner of the palette and save the path. Then in the same menu go to clipping path and select the path you just saved.
Save the document as an .eps file.
The clipping path will preserve the outline but has a sharp edge.
With fuzzy pictures it might be better to create your background in Photoshop and bring all your kitty images in on top of it.

Hope this helps,
