Adobe Photoshop/moving layers problem

Question
QUESTION: Hello Kamal, nice to meet you :-)

I am fairly new to photoshop and I don't know how best to explain my problem, I hope you can make sense of this :-)

I believe I have version 7 and although I am getting the hang of things, today I have come up with a problem that I can not understand.

When I select a layer, image or text, and try to move it using the move tool, as soon as I click the cursor over the image or text that I want to move, in the layers column I see it jumps to the background layer, which is never that layer that I want to move.
It seems the only way I can move anything is by selecting the layer and move tool and use the arrow keys on my keyboard instead of the mouse/cursor. This is more time consuming and extremely frustrating!

I hope you were able to follow all that :-)

If you can please help me I would be very very grateful but please, explain things to me as though you are speaking to a child, as I said, I am kind of new to photoshop and only know the very basics. Step by step help/instructions would be excellent! :-)

Thank you very much!!!
Hannah

ANSWER: Hi Hannah,
your mail is so sweet, i want to find a solution for your problem anyways. ;-p

just let me know if:
you select the image you want to move, in the layers pallette, by clicking on the appropriate layer.

Then when you try to move that image in the canvas area, some other layer is moving, is it?

QUESTION: Yes, when I try to move the image or text on the canvas area, it always goes to the background layer, which is often locked and so I get a message saying that it can't move the selected layer as it's locked. but its always the same, not matter what I try to move, it always jumps to the background layer...

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Hannah

Answer
Hi Hannah,
There's another option you can try.

When the Pick Tool' is selected, see in the information bar on the top if the check box "Auto-Select" has been checked. If yes, uncheck it.

Just thought this could be helpful.
