Adobe Photoshop/saving Jpeg on cd for prints

Question
Hi Huma,
I have photoshop cs3 extended, but I'm a new user.  My question is....I'm an artist and have several paintings that need to be printed in various sizes; some need to be printed the exact size of the original, say like 48x36.  How do I take an image of the painting (I have a canon 10mp that I use)and save it on cd and make sure there's ample DPI's for a nice print at any size?  Do I just plunk the dimensions of what I want to print in under image size and see if the image has good DPI's?  And after I do this, (putting an image size of 48 x 36)will I see on the screen what I will see in print?
I'd appreciate any help you can give!
Thank You!
Sue

Answer
It’s a purely technical question sue,

Understanding the pixel and DPI requirements every time you make a file is important.

Check this link

http://www.michaelfurtman.com/pixels.htm

And here I found a DPI calculator for you where you can type the input and heck how much DPI is required to take a perfect output.

Here it is...

If you still need anything more in detail, don’t hesitate to ask.
