Adobe Photoshop - Saving a file with slices for the web

Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 10/27/2009

Question
QUESTION: I am working on a web image that is comprised of text and image layers.  The white text sits on a transparent layer.  I need to keep the file size down without losing the crispness of the text or the transparent layer below it.  Is there a way I can compress the layers at different sizes -- make one a png-24 and the rest png-8?  I've tried making layer-based slices, but is there a way to save the separate slices as one single image file?
Thanks, in advance, for your help.
IMAGE: Web Header Image

ANSWER: Hi Carolyn,

In the Save for Web and Devices window, make sure you can see your optimized image. Then click on a slice and change the setting to what you want, then click another and you can change slices individually. You cannot compress layers at different rates, only slices. There is no way to create a single image as one file. What you will end up doing is saving out the HTML and slices and using the HTML code to reassemble in the browser.

Thanks

Kevin

QUESTION: Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the speedy response!  I've actually already saved the slices and code, but I really need to save the image as one file.  This image will be one in a series of 7 rotating images (and I know that this probably isn't the best way to achieve any of this, but I've never done any kind of design for web so I'm playing it by ear), so reassembling everything is going to get messy.  If I can't save the slices as one image, is there there another way for me to make the text look good without having a huge file?
Thanks again!

ANSWER: Hi Carolyn,

Save the whole thing as a PNG 24. Your file resolution should already be set at 72dpi if its not already.

QUESTION: Hi Kevin,
Thanks again.  When I save as a png-24, the file size is over 300k, even with the resolution set at 72.  I really need something in the 65-75k range.  When I try to optimize to a smaller file size, the text loses clarity.  Sorry to be such a pest -- I'm just at a loss for how to bring down my file size without losing the crispness of the text.
Best,
Carolyn

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

Without knowing the physical size of the file, Im afraid you have a tough choice ahead. The limitations with the image size at 75k is probably not going to leave you with any kind of quality for text. The only other suggestion I have for you is to try to make your physical size smaller bringing the text button closer to the image.

I wish there was some magical answer, but when it comes to physical size vs. the file size the text will be the casualty.

Thanks

Kevin
